My controller review of Dirt Rally 2.0

So, a few things that I should get out of the way in the interest of fairness. I absolutely love this game so everything said should be taken with a pinch of salt.

Also haven’t tried every car in the game and I have only briefly touched rallycross. Bare in mind i’m only playing on a controller now as I do not have my steering wheel in university with me hence the controller review. So, on with the review.

 

Dirt Rally 2.0 is of course the much-hyped sequel to Dirt Rally. The game that made Codemasters realise how big the following of sim racing is.

First experience of this game came at the Autosport show this year at the Xite rallycross teams stand. Where we got chance to give rallycross ago.

During our short 3 minutes on that pre-release build we knew straight away that we was going to love this game!

The way the cars handling changes so much on the surface and the control felt while sliding this car around filled my heart with joy.

 

When loading it up on the pc for the first time, it didn’t go quite so smoothly! As a deluxe edition owner, got the extra cars for free straight away and chose to go with the Rally GT Porsche 911 to begin with.

BIG MISTAKE!

What we realised very quickly is that the game like its predecessor is very unforgiving on the stages and quickly destroyed that car.

With that in mind decided that we needed to scale it back a bit. So picked up a Fiesta R2T and this car is so much fun to throw around, its untrue.

I can remember the first stage. Poland. (not going to try spell the stage name) round one.

I blasted off into this stage confident that my new slower machine would be tameable and quick. In hindsight, thinking that any car in dirt rally is tameable was a mistake!

Think i made about 4 corners into the stage before clipping the bank and over and over the car went.

 

Some people had mentioned that they felt that the stages were too narrow but happen to disagree. Even on a controller I am able to let and R5 Fiesta slide round corners and keep it in position and off the banks.

Feel that the width of the stages is realistic, and I love the challenge. Finding that even with the controller on Dirt 2.0 I can put in quick times.

Currently in my career mode I am about to progress into the 4th difficulty level and I’m enjoying every second of it, even if it is a little hard to place the car exactly where I want it on some stages.

The feeling I get through the controller is good enough to know if the car has broken traction or if it is about to and I need to push a little less to maintain control.

 

One thing that I do not like about the game that may surprise people is that because of the issues shortly after the deluxe editions launch, they gave players who owned this edition £1millon for free, and if anything this ruined the grinding aspect of the game a little bit.

 

Allowing people to have access to the R5 class straight away which disappointed me because finally getting enough winnings to unlock a 2010 WRC car on dirt rally 1 was one of the best feelings.

A major thing that I do not like about the game is that the single player is online only. This is annoying when on my uni wifi which often cuts out.

Also think that if they could get more livery options as standard from cars that are running in national championships such as the BRC would be cool.

 

 

To summarise this review. I would give Dirt Rally 2.0 a 95/100 because of the issues mentioned above, but I would also like to say that the feeling when driving cars flat out on this game, to me is far better than any other game out there.
